Joy brings unique experience to Per Scholas as a nonprofit leader, entrepreneur, educator, performing artist, and volunteer, and has an extensive background delivering results-oriented leadership across school districts, nonprofits, and corporate clients. Prior to joining Per Scholas, Joy served as the Executive Director of Life Pieces to Masterpieces where she served African American boys and young men, ages 3 to 25, in Washington DC’s Wards 7 and 8. There, she led the staff to deliver visual arts-based programming, which provided “apprentices” with opportunities to discover and activate their innate and creative abilities and change life challenges into possibilities. Joy also coaches clients toward meeting professional goals through her own LLC and serves as Board Chair of Sela Public Charter School.
A Chicago native, Joy has a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from DePaul University, Master of Arts in Educational Administration with an administrative certificate, from Governors State University, and is a certified Organizational Development professional.
Whether working in schools or non-profit settings, Joy has consistently been driven by her passion for ensuring that people enjoy basic human rights – all in an effort to end the cycle of poverty. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, napping, spending quality time with her family, and rescuing dogs. Fun facts: She speaks Japanese and is classically trained in ballet (though she doesn’t get many opportunities to practice either of them these days).
