Request for Volunteer Advisors for Student Day of Design Missions

by STEMconnector

Water Warriors, a Day of Design Mission focusing on flood prevention, is taking place on December 8th at the Klein Independent School District in Houston TX, where Hurricane Harvey recently ravaged much of the community. 275 teams of 4-5 students will be participating in this Water Warriors Mission, which is an incredible undertaking on behalf of the schools, community, and students themselves.

On December 8th, students will be working on their prototype to then present it to a panel of judges in January. As part of the Day of Design commitment to community building, we are currently looking for corporate volunteers to provide mentoring through in-person or Skype sessions for these student groups. Our goal is to match each team with an advisor. Though the exact time is open to scheduling, the mentor would be required to communicate with their team for approximately thirty minutes to one hour at some point between 9 AM and 1 PM CT on December 8.

Mentors will provide teams with feedback on their prototype and help students learn how to innovate and problem solve. More importantly, working with an advisor will allow students the opportunity to engage with corporate members and gain important employability and professional skills as they work to solve a real-world problem.

As part of this experience, the students will be reaching out directly to their assigned advisor to set up time for a Skype sessions during the allocated hours on December 8th. All we would need is a list of individuals who can volunteer their time and their contact information so the students may reach out to them.

If you or members of your staff (company) are able to volunteer your time to provide feedback via Skype (or in-person if you are local and available) to students as they work on finding a solution to flood prevention in their areas, we would welcome your participation.

Date: December 8th
Time: 30min – 1hr during the hours of 9:30am-1:00pm CT
