2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. This timely webinar kicked off by emphasizing the significance of the Civil Rights Act and the challenges faced in education today. Attendees heard from Dr. Calvin Mackie, Founder and CEO, STEM NOLA and Dr. Nicole Norfles, Ed.D., Director, Program Practice and Innovation, Council for Opportunity in Education, who shared their experiences and insights on the importance of equity in education and workforce development.

Both panelists spoke about the importance of collaboration. Dr. Norfles spoke about how TRIO programs had improved and adapted through their history with compromise and bipartisanship - a lesson she pointed out could be very prescient today. Community-based approaches to ensuring access to high quality STEM experiences, requires a hands-on deck approach like the one employed by STEM NOLA.
