Research Analyst

The Research Analyst is an integral part of the work of STEMconnector’s core insight generation function. With over 120 member organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative non-profit organizations and educational institutions, STEMconnector provides the unique opportunity to interact with C-Suite leaders and field experts in a variety of capacities. This is a fast-pasted working environment with opportunity to contribute to innovative products at the intersection of STEM strategy, CSR, and diversity and inclusion efforts. The Research Analyst will be able to build strong applied research and analytical skills across these topics and sectors, as well as an understanding of a variety of issues around STEM talent and overall workforce development.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Analyst will be responsible for developing own research deliverables and supporting other team members through data gathering, analysis, and reporting. The Research Analyst will report directly to the Senior Director of Product Development & Research, who will have responsibility for oversight of Analyst’s work and his/her professional development. This position will work closely with members of the Communications team to convey research insights in a visually appealing and media- friendly manner, and, as needed, with the Client Services teams to support content delivery to clients. Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as active member of research team
    • Maintain understanding of research agenda and all recent publications to inform active participation in a team setting
    • Identify new research topics
    • Serve as thought partner to team members on their own projects
  • Manage research projects and/or workstreams within others’ research projects
    • Create research workplans and deliver against them
    • Conduct literature reviews and analysis of relevant quantitative data sets
    • Conduct interviews with cross-sector leaders and others in the STEM ecosystem, and as ability is demonstrated
    • Create and analyze surveys
  • Create and share research deliverables
    • Write white paper research deliverables and/or share findings for inclusion in others’ research deliverables
    • Regularly create PowerPoint slides visualizing quantitative and qualitative data for use by STEMconnector staff and possibly STEMconnector members
    • Draft landing pages, blogs, and other research-related content for website
    • Educate STEMconnector staff on research findings
    • As skill is demonstrated, share research findings on external webinars and with clients on calls and in meetings
  • Execute administrative tasks as assigned to support broader research team, including scheduling meetings with internal and external parties, tracking contacts, taking notes during key meetings, and other similar tasks

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-3 years or equivalent experience in a strategy consulting, evaluation, research, or another similar analytical role
  • Knowledge of U.S. workforce development, corporate philanthropy, corporate talent acquisition strategy/issues, K-12 education, or related field(s), as demonstrated by either academic or work experience in the issue area(s)
  • Experience in customer service or client facing roles, including interacting with external parties with professionalism and maturity
  • Experience conducting research and analysis projects, including:
    • Creating and applying research objectives, methodologies, learning questions, and/or other frameworks to guide analysis
    • Conducting primary and secondary research from a variety of sources, both quantitative and qualitative
    • Creating interview protocols and surveys
    • Conducting interviews
    • Conducting analysis of and interpreting findings, both quantitative and qualitative
    • Writing reports, research briefs, PowerPoint decks, and related documentation to convey complex concepts/findings to various audiences

Skills and Mindsets

  • Strong critical thinking skills to answer predetermined research questions/ work within existing frameworks and to create new ones.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously, prioritize deliverables, and handle unanticipated demands in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong PowerPoint skills
  • Strong data visualization skills
  • Fluency in quantitative analysis techniques in Excel, including in basic statistics and using tools such as pivot tables
  • Exceptional detail orientation, including commitment to rigor and accuracy
  • High level of comfort with ambiguity
  • Ability to solve problems both independently and as part of a team
  • Desire and ability to learn new topics quickly, and to proactively seek out ways to contribute beyond own workstream

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience presenting on webinars, presenting to live audiences, and/or advising clients

Research Assistant

The Research Assistant supports the work of STEMconnector’s core insight generation function, along with the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and product offerings such as Innovation Labs.

The Research Assistant will be able to build research and analysis skills across these topics and sectors, to grow project management skills, and to deepen understanding of a variety of issues around STEM talent and overall workforce development.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will support to the Senior Director in executing the yearly research agenda, participate in day-to-day functions to support research projects such as scheduling interviews, taking notes, conducting secondary desk research and analysis to address research questions, and more. He/she is expected to be an active participant in internal team meetings and brainstorm sessions. The Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting development of various research and resource deliverables.

The Research Assistant will report directly to the Senior Director of Product Development & Research, who will have responsibility for oversight of his/her work and professional development. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain understanding of research agenda and all recent publications to inform active participation in a team setting
  • Schedule and take notes on research interviews with cross-sector leaders and others in the STEM ecosystem
  • Conduct literature reviews across disciplines
  • Understand, track, and analyze key findings from quantitative data sets
  • Draft summaries of research findings and themes
  • Support Senior Director’s speaking engagements, including drafting PowerPoint slides summarizing research, talking points, and briefing books
  • Coordinate with other members of research team and other STEMconnector teams on key deliverables
  • Keep track of contacts via customer relationship management system
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned, including scheduling meetings with internal and external parties, knowledge management, taking notes during key meetings, and other similar tasks

  • Experience in customer service or client facing roles, including interacting with external parties with professionalism and maturity
  • Experience with the research process via education or work, including:
    • Applying research objectives, methodologies, learning questions, and/or other frameworks to guide a project
    • Conducting secondary research from a variety of sources, both quantitative and qualitative
    • Analyzing findings, both quantitative and qualitative
    • Drafting summaries of research findings

Skills & Mindsets

  • Project management skills, including managing multiple, competing priorities, and ability to accomplish tasks and activities efficiently and according to importance
  • Ability to communicate effectively by email and phone with executives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Basic PowerPoint skills
