The Media Manager is an integral part of the work of STEMconnector’s core external relations and strategic brand engagement function. With over 120 member organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative nonprofit organizations and educational institutions, STEMconnector provides the unique opportunity to interact with leaders across the STEM talent ecosystem. This is a fast-paced working environment with opportunity to contribute to innovative initiatives and products at the intersection of STEM strategy, CSR, and diversity and inclusion efforts. The Media Manager will be able to help position the STEMconnector brand as a key thought leader working to build a diverse and sustainable workforce, while also amplifying the work of our members to key audiences.

Key Responsibilities

The Media Manager will be responsible for managing all of STEMconnector and Million Women Mentors (an initiative of STEMconnector)’s media presence, reacting in real time to news related to our clients and our research, and actively working to increase our digital presence and audience through social media, blog posts, press releases, engagement with traditional media, and digital media campaigns. In addition to managing overall media for STEMconnector and Million Women Mentors, the Media Manager will be responsible for compiling and sending out the STEMdaily newsletter Monday through Friday, consisting of top stories in the STEM workforce and promoting the initiatives of STEMconnector and our clients.  The Media Manager will report directly to the Senior Director of External Relations & Strategic Brand Engagement/Director of Million Women Mentors, who will have responsibility for oversight of his/her professional development, and will be expected to keep well-informed of news related to the STEM talent ecosystem as it relates to the STEMconnector mission.

This position will work closely with members of the Research and Product Development team, as well as Client Services and Business Development to convey research insights and client content priorities to target audiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as active member of the external relations team
    • Actively work with other members of the team (Senior Director, Events Manager, Communications Manager) to ensure media expectations of all initiatives are met
    • Maintain editorial calendar with updated content from STEMconnector and clients
    • Develop brand awareness and online reputation
  • Manage all aspects of STEMconnector and Million Women Mentors (MWM) social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram)
    • Create, curate, and manage fresh content related to the STEM workforce, STEMconnector research and insights, events, and client programs and initiatives
    • Follow and share content for STEMconnector members and partners
    • Prepare detailed social media toolkits for major STEMconnector events (2 per year) and various initiatives that arise throughout the year
    • Live Tweet/Share social media content throughout STEMconnector events
    • Prepare monthly toolkits for members to capitalize on specialized holidays/designations (ie: National Mentoring Month, STEM/STEAM Day)
    • Provide and analyze metrics on targeted social media campaigns and tweak strategy accordingly
    • Gain insight on STEMconnector and MWM audiences and create content that aligns to those audiences while also targeting new audiences
  • Update and manage STEMdaily newsletter, going out to 16,000 readers every day
    • STEMdaily is produced every day featuring 6-7 stories about STEM news including new releases, initiatives, education news, etc. as well as approximately 3 stories from STEMconnector or clients that get repeated for a few days/weeks
    • The Media Manager will have the opportunity to survey our STEMdaily audience and re-imagine the look and feel as well as the content to better meet the needs of our audience
  • Manage the STEMconnector blog
    • Provide regular longer form content from STEMconnector and our members on an ongoing basis
    • Write and pitch blog posts
  • Build out STEMconnector’s general media function
    • The Media Manager will have the opportunity to help build out our general outreach to traditional media including op-ed pitching, press releases, and media advisories
    • Identify press opportunities through evolving issues
    • Build relationships with media influencers
    • Identify target media outlets and influencers aligned to content distribution
    • Track all STEMconnector media mentions and share on website
  • Work with external relations team to develop communications rollout plan for each STEMconnector research release
    • Working closely with relevant member of Research team, learn about content of upcoming research, and draft ideas for release and ongoing communications to STEMconnector members through our channels
    • Identify opportunities to use research findings for marketing and brand building purposes beyond members (i.e., placement in external newsletters, blogs on external sites traditional media, social media campaigns, pitch interviews with STEMconnector researchers, Twitter chats, etc.)


Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, marketing, or related field
  • 3-5 years or equivalent experience leading digital and social media, and/or managing media relations
  • Knowledge of U.S. workforce development, STEM education, or related field(s), as demonstrated by either academic or work experience in the issue area(s)
  • Familiarity with mass emailing clients, preferably Constant Contact

  • Proactive approach to identifying and responding to trends in the social and digital media spaces
  • Ability to solve problems both independently and as part of a team
  • Desire and ability to learn new topics quickly, and to proactively seek out ways to contribute beyond own workstream 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience presenting on webinars, presenting to live audiences, and/or advising clients
  • Graphic design using Adobe Creative Suite
  • Existing media relationships in US workforce development, STEM education, or related fields
